Easter brings sweet sales to East Texas shops

Tyler, TX -- Part of what makes Phyllis Harper look forward to Easter Sunday is seeing her grand kids' smiling faces.

"They still get a treat out of what's inside the basket," Harper said.

she's doing shopping before the weekend, loading up on chocolates, candies, and treats. It's a tradition she says families can make affordable, even on a lean budget.

"I think families just make it work. I grew up not having a whole lot, but we always managed to buy eggs and dye 'em, and had fun around the table," Harper said.

Places like Sweet Gourmet count on the Easter business. "Over two weeks, we sell so much of it, that it really helps our bottom line when December rolls around," Deborah Robertson, a salesperson at Sweet Gourmet, said.

Sweet Hope Cafe, in business now 5 months, also seeing demand. "We're pretty filled up with orders," Stephanie Pitarro, a baker at Sweet Hope Cafe, said.

Pitarro says most people will find other places in their budget to cut back, in order to fill Easter baskets.

"You want to stick with tradition, and keep the kids happy and have their little Easter eggs filled with candies and cookies," Pitarro.

Harper advises not to put all your eggs, or candy, in one basket, all at once.

"Shop around and shop early," Harper said.
