TYLER (KYTX) - CBS 19 has learned John Tyler High School principal, Michael Timms, has been placed on administrative leave.

Timms took over as principal in the summer of 2012 after former principal, Shon Joseph, left the school district.

"We need to involve the community to really figure out what is really going on with our administration here at John Tyler," said Sonya Blair.

John Tyler parent Sonya Blair said she was shocked to find out Principal Michael Timms had been placed on administrative leave.

"It's a big concern. A very big concern," said Blair.

Blair's son just graduated from John Tyler. She told us she was noticing improvements at the school under Timm's direction.

"They were keeping the students in class a little bit better than in the past," said Blair.

Timms took over as head principal after former principal, Shon Joseph, left the Tyler ISD school district in May of last year.

Timms had been at John Tyler, serving in leadership roles for two years. He was instrumental in starting the freshman academy on campus.

"It's sad and it's sad for the community for something like this to happen," said Terry Pennyman.

John Tyler supporter and businessman Terry Pennyman said it's the students at the school he worries about.

Timms is the sixth principal at the school in almost 13 years.

"By having principals time and time again, I know it's devastating," said Pennyman.

Parents are now searching for answers, wondering if they're about to lose another principal, once again.

"That's a big question mark for me, too. What is going on that we can't keep them after two years? All of a sudden they're gone," said Blair.

TISD released the following statement:

John Tyler High School Principal Michael Timms is on administrative leave. As this is a personnel matter, state law limits the amount and nature of the information that can be shared at this time.

Joe Coburn, director of secondary instruction, is currently serving as the interim principal at John Tyler High School. Tyler ISD wants to assure parents and the community that school has continued to operate without disruption.

We'll continue to update you on this situation as we learn more.
