We live in the South, so some of us may have a Southern accent, but would you consider saying "goodbye" to "howdy, y'all"?
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee was going to offer a speech class for its workers next month to do just that, until it got canceled.

Tyler, TX -- It's that time some of us look forward to all year, the arrival of that big tax refund check. Many people use it to splurge on things they otherwise couldn't afford.

Linda Brown and her family drove in from Nacogdoches, hoping to leave Tyler in a new car. "I have like $3,000 to put down, so I'm just going to see what that'll get me," Brown said.

That $3,000 is her tax refund money, she's waited for. "This is my opportunity, if I hadn't had any tax money, I probably wouldn't be able to come and purchase a car," Brown said.

She knows she's not alone in deciding to splurge now. "I live in an apartment complex, and all three of the ladies that live there used their money to get new cars," Brown said.

Dealerships are thanking refund checks for a boost in sales over the past month.

"Right now half of people coming in are using their tax return money. It's a really good time to buy right now," Greg Strickland, a salesman at Peltier Nissan, said.

He says it's because of factory rebates, and people able to give bigger down payments. "If you're putting down $2,000 or $3,000, that's the average right now. It helps lower that payment to get you in a motor vehicle," Strickland said.

Customers like Brown are in high demand across the board. "When folks are trying to figure out what to do with their tax refund, that's exactly what we target," Bryan Wright, General Manager at Pratt Modular Homes, said.

He says they have advertisements geared toward people who received refunds and are offering incentives.

"We're giving away porches, decks, and helping with appliances like a washer and dryer," Wright said.

These businesses depend on February and March sales, for a good start to the summer.
