Only on CBS 19: An East Texas firefighter's final honor

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON HEIGHTS (KYTX) - The Kilgore College Fire Academy honored Jackson Heights firefighter Jalen Smith Wednesday night.

The 20-year-old died in a December car crash while trying to get to the fire station to respond to a fire call.

"This is what my baby loved doing," said Charlean Mosley.

It's been awhile since Charlean Mosley held her son's firefighting gear.

"This is all he wanted to be. Since the time, he was a baby," explained Mosley.

Her baby is no longer with her. Everyday, she feels his absence.

"It just seems like he's away working" said Mosley.

Jalen Smith's mother has tried to stay strong since his death.

"You know a lot of people would be mad, but I'm not mad, because Jalen died doing what he loved to do," said Mosley.

Because, she knows in her heart, it's what he would want her to do.

"It's getting better, because I know he wouldn't want me to cry all the time," said Mosley.

It's not only Jalen's mother who misses him. His fellow firefighters share her same pain, because the fire station is a lot quieter without him.

"His jokes, his laughter, him responding to calls when nobody else would," said Chief Terence Thompson, Jackson Heights Volunteer Fire Department.

Charlean said she can see her son smiling right now. A smile shining even wider today.

"He would look at me and say momma, I did it," said Mosley.

He did do it, bringing one more moment of joy to his mother.

"I'm a proud mom, I really am. I'm really proud of my baby," said Mosley.
