We live in the South, so some of us may have a Southern accent, but would you consider saying "goodbye" to "howdy, y'all"?
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee was going to offer a speech class for its workers next month to do just that, until it got canceled.

Tyler, TX (KYTX)-- Texas lawmakers consider a bill that would change the way the state evaluates a school's performance.

Instead of words like "exemplary" or "recognized" campuses and districts would be scored like a report card: A,B,C,D, or F, with D and F being considered unacceptable.

Some school administrators say they are not in favor of it because it doesn't give an accurate representation of the big picture.

But mom Megan Harville supports a new accountability system.

"You really don't know what's going on with the way they are graded now. You don't have any idea where they stand, or how they are doing with anything," Harville, who has a 6th grader at Murchison ISD, said.

She says mirroring report card grades makes it easier for parents. "I think you should have D and F so you should know if school is doing that poorly," Harville said.

But not all administrators think SB 1408 is the answer.

"I just think it gets too specific, and I feel like we're not here to 'I got ya' as a school district," Gary Mooring, Tyler ISD Superintendent, said.

The measure is in line with HB 5, which also addresses school accountability and curriculum requirements. Part of that bill, already passed by the Texas House, cuts back the number of end-of-course exams students must take from 15 to 5.

If passed, Senate Bill 1408 goes into effect for the 2013-2014 school year.
