Health Alert: Melanoma cases going up

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Cases of malignant melanoma in light-skinned children are going up. A new study published in the Journal Pediatrics shows between 1973 and 2009 -- more than 12 hundred Caucasian children were diagnosed with the disease. The overall rate of pediatric melanoma increased by an average of two percent a year. Some doctors say the reason may be an increased use of tanning beds by young people.

(CBS) - New research shows labeling an otherwise healthy infant as having a disease makes parents more eager to give their child medication- even if they're told the drugs are ineffective. The study evaluated how parents who came to a pediatric clinic in Michigan responded to a hypothetical problem of an infant who cries and spits up excessively but has no other health issues. Some of the parents were told the babies had gastroesophogeal reflux disease, or GERD. They were more likely to want medications for their children, even when told they were not effective.

(CBS) - A new study shows children with sleep apnea have a higher risk of behavioral and learning problems. Researchers say the condition can lead to ADHD-like problems including hyperactivity and disruptive behavior. The five year study examined 263 children between the ages of 6 and 11. Those who had persistent sleep apnea were seven times more likely to have learning problems.
