Chapel Hill ISD offering new opportunities to elementary students

Posted: Updated:

CHAPEL HILL (KYTX) -The brochure Chapel Hill school administrators are handing out may look a little confusing.

But if you look carefully, it's a roadmap for the future of their elementary schools.

"We're excited about the new elementary configuration," said Lisa McCreary, Assistant Superintendent.

We spoke with Assistant Superintendent Lisa McCreary about what this all means.

"This has all been a commitment to move forward with 21st century learning. A new vision for our district," said McCreary.

The new vision involves adding project based learning, more dual language opportunities and a magnet school.

Jackson and wise elementary schools along with Kissam intermediate would have to be restructured to make it work.

Parents will see these programs phased in, starting in the 2013-2014 school year.

"It's our quest to continue to grow and provide the best opportunity for our students," explained McCreary.

Wise elementary would become a magnet school that emphasizes fine arts with kindergarten through fifth grade by the 2015-2016 school year.

Jackson would be kindergarten through fifth grade with project based learning and dual language courses.

Kissam would offer the same with traditional classrooms.

"Parents seem to be excited about the new opportunities we're offering their students," said McCreary.

But, some parents are not. Kayle Kienitz is the parent of a kindergartner at Wise elementary.

She doesn't think anything needs to be changed.

"She's learning a lot, so I don't really see a need for change. I have heard no one else complain either," said Kienitz.

When she looks at this brochure, she sees too much opportunity.

"I think it's going to offer more , but also for the younger kids, I think it's going to overwhelm them," added Kienitz.

Chapel Hill school leaders said they have done their research and that will not be the case.

For them, they see more students with an even better education than their classmates of the past.

Wise magnet school and certain programs at Kissam will require applications. Those applications will be available at your child's school on Monday.
