(CNN) - Today marks 45 years since the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.

On April 4th, 1968, the civil rights leader was gunned down in Memphis by James Earl Ray. Four years earlier, King was the youngest person to date to win the Nobel Peace Prize. His legacy includes a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom; a monument in Washington; and a national holiday in his name observed every January.
