Health Alert: Reduce salt intake, increase potassium

(CBS) - You may want to say so long to a lot of salt in your diet and increase potassium. The World Health Organization says it could save millions of lives from heart disease and stroke. Cutting down on salt is commonly advised for people with high blood pressure and now health experts say increasing potassium has a similar benefit. Potassium is found in most fresh fruit and vegetables.


(CBS) - If you don't like running, but you're still trying to stay heart healthy, there's some good news for you. A new study in Berkeley, California discovered walking can lower the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes just as much as running. Researchers followed thousands of people for six years and found similar health benefits for walkers and runners who covered the same distance.


(CBS) - A new British study finds people who gain excess weight in their 20's and 30's are twice as likely to develop chronic kidney disease in their 60's. Researchers also found adults who gained weight in their belly and hips in their 40's and early 50's were at increased risk for kidney problems. Doctors say the findings highlight the importance of watching your weight as you get older.
