Ex-Enron CEO Jeff Skilling may get early release

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - Former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling could get a shorter sentence -- even though he was scheduled to spend at least another 15 years in prison.

The Department of Justice says it's in talks with Skilling's lawyers about a new sentencing agreement. Skilling was found guilty of fraud, conspiracy, insider trading and lying to auditors. That fraud helped lead to Enron's collapse in 2001, costing thousands of employees their jobs and wiping out life savings and retirement for many.

Victims of the Enron scandal are invited to participate in Skilling's sentencing hearing later this year. You may remember Kenneth Lay, who was CEO of Enron before Skilling took over. Lay was also convicted, but he died in 2006 while awaiting sentencing.
