East Texas fuel stations fined for state environmental violations

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - A South Longview convenience store was fined $7,518 for violating state environmental regulations twice in less than two years, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The commission (TCEQ), which requlates air and water quality and other environmental issues throughout the state, accepted the penalties March 27 in a monthly meeting in Austin.

Mobberly Mart, at 301 S. Mobberly Avenue, is owned by Asad Trading Inc. The TCEQ says Mobberly Mart committed five violations between August 2011 and February 2012.

Among the violations was a failure to monitor its underground storage tanks for releases of chemicals at least once a month as required by law, and Mobberly Mart did not have certification from the TCEQ to accept fuel or other regulated substances into its storage tanks.  The store was ordered to immediately stop accepting fuel until it has obtained a valid delivery certificate.

The TCEQ on March 27 finally accepted penalties and settlements against 19 petroleum storage tank owners throughout Texas, according to online records at tceq.texas.gov. Other East Texas convenience stores fined by the TCEQ on March 27 were Topps Exxon Junction in Daingerfield; Bunny's store in the 16000 block of FM 2493 in Tyler; and Wag A Bag 3 on Greer Blvd. in Pittsburg.
