ETX Synagogue hosts "From Ashes To Life" For Holocaust Memorial Day

Tyler (KYTX) - To commemorate Holocaust memorial day people gathered to pay their respects in Tyler. The theme was "From Ashes To Life".

"Members of my extended family did die in the Holocaust and in the World War 2."

Stan Weiner is a member of the congregation at Ahavath Achim Synagogue and he says that while this remembrance may be painful it's extremely important not forget it.

"While forgetting things sometimes is a blessing it's also a dangerous thing because it allows you to repeat some of the mistakes, some of the problems of the past," said Weiner.

In the Jewish community candles are very symbolic and they represent a number of things. Here you may only see six candles but they represent more than what meets the eye. They represent the 6 million people who were killed and persecuted during the holocaust.

Weiner said, "It is symbolic in a sense that these people were killed and persecuted for no other reason than their ethnic and religious background."

"We consider that the memorialzation of those who passed away is a critical opportunity for the community to learn about the problems of antisemitisms, which was one of the inciting factors of the holocaust," said The chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Day committee, Ronald Beals.

He feels this event is important because it sheds light on the truth.

"There's a large movement within the community, not just in this community, but in the world today to deny the presence of a Holocaust that occurred between 33 and 45," he said.

All in honor of the 13 million people who perished.

"I think its a great day when people set a formal day of recognition when people take the time out of their busy lives and schedules to come in and to remember these things," said Weiner.
