KAUFMAN (CBSDFW.COM) – A controversy has developed over the reward fund for help solving the murders of two Kaufman County prosecutors.

The family of the victims say its too low. Meanwhile, CBS 11 has learned some donors are withholding cash over fear of retaliation.

Kaufman County Crime Stoppers is answering back to Saturday's criticism that their organization hasn't raised enough money to encourage leads in the Hasse-McLelland murder investigation.

"If somebody is going to criticize or complain about the way we're doing things or the amount of the reward they would check have they sent us a donation, " said Doug Gibbs with Crime Stoppers.

A spokesman for some of Mike and Cindy McLelland's children wants the reward up to $1 million dollars.

But the nature of the crimes may be discouraging donations.

CBS 11 has learned from sources that Oak Farms-Schepps Dairy, which has a long history of offering rewards to help solve high profile North Texas crimes, has declined in this investigation.

Sources say Kaufman Crime Stoppers officials were told by the Dallas based business that it was worried about possible retaliation against its drivers if the Aryan Brotherhood or another gang is responsible for the murders.

Oak Farms has a policy against rewards in cases involving gangs or drugs.  A spokesman declined comment.
