Longview ISD under investigation for Title IX violations

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: Longview High School teacher and former Lady Lobos soccer coach Chris Yoder says he filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights, which led to an ongoing federal investigation that the school violated Title IX.

Yoder says he first complained last summer and fall to school officials, including trustees. One trustee connected him with the district's Title IX coordinator, he said. After a two-month probe, the coordinator - LISD Deputy Superintendent Andrea Mayo - took Yoder's concerns to LISD trustees in December, but no action was taken, Yoder said.

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - An East Texas school district is under investigation by the Office of Civil Rights.

Longview ISD released a statement in response to the district being investigated for Title IX Violation.

The district explained in the statement that OCR was present in the district to interview students, personnel and to take a look at facilities and equipment for gender equity in compliance with Title IX.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

OCR officials released a statement to KYTX CBS 19 explaining they are investigating a complaint alleging the Longview Independent School District discriminates against female athletes and students at Longview High School on the basis of sex with respect to:  accommodation of the athletic interests and abilities of female students; and provision of equipment and supplies, locker rooms, practice and competitive facilities, coaches' compensation and teaching assignments, for female athletes as compared to male athletes.  The case is under investigation.

KYTX CBS 19 will continue to update with more information as it becomes available.
