Caution urged after deadly Winona house fire

Posted: Updated:

Sunday's deadly house fire in Winona is a tragic reminder of how important it is to make a plan to get you and your children out of the house in an emergency.

The Red Cross recommends searching for two exits to every room. Then sit down with your children, draw out maps together showing ways to get out and even practice leaving the house using the plan you come up with.

"[Fires] are very very frightening and so it's that much more important to know ahead of time and for everybody in the family to know ahead of time what to do so that you don't have to think," Smith County Red Cross Executive Director Tammy Prater said. "You do it automatically."

The Red Cross also recommends changing the batteries in your smoke detector once a year. Smoke detectors themselves should be changed once every ten years.
