Health Alert: Patients skip medications to cut costs

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new study from the National Center for Health Statistics finds that adults especially those who are poor, or don't have insurance, are more likely to skip taking prescribed medications -- that's in order to save money. But researchers say failing to fill-out prescriptions is costing those patients their health, and causing more trips to the doctor and emergency rooms.

(CBS) - The American College of Physicians has issued new recommendations for men who are considering prostate cancer screening. The group says men in their 50s and 60s should discuss the limited benefits and possible harms of the so-called "PSA" test with their doctor before going through the screening.

(CBS) - Researchers in London say the month a baby is born could impact the development of their immune system. Scientists found that babies born in May have significantly lower levels of Vitamin D - which helps fight diseases - than babies born in November. Researchers say that's because the baby's mothers are exposed to less sunlight in the winter months, which means less Vitamin D. Scientists say more research is needed into the possible benefits of Vitamin D supplements during pregnancy.
