Health Alert: Cigarette smoking on the decline

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Cigarette smoking is on the decline in America. An annual report from the American Cancer Society finds smoking dropped among both men and women during the last decade. It appears high school students are getting the message-- that's where researchers saw the biggest declines. More than a third of them smoked in 1997, now only 18 percent do – that's a new low.

(CBS) - The study also found teens and 20- somethings who use indoor tanning beds increase their risk of melanoma 75 percent. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. It's a disease that strikes nearly 77-thousand Americans each year, and takes nearly 95-hundred lives. 33 states currently have laws restricting minors from using indoor tanning facilities.

(CBS) - The obesity rate seems to have slowed in the past decade… especially among women and girls. 18 percent of adolescents and 35 percent of adults in America are obese. Still the American Cancer Society says up to one-third of the million and a half new cancer cases this year can be attributed to poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and being overweight.
