Harrison county homeowner shoots back at burglars

Harrison County 911 operators received a call regarding a home burglary, in progress with shots fired, in the 7300 Block of Red Oak, Hallsville, Texas at approximately 11:30 AM.

The owner of the residence stated he came home to find a vehicle backed up in his carport and 2 black males inside his residence. He exited his vehicle and one of the suspects began firing a 22 caliber gun at the owner of the residence. He exchanged gunfire with his weapon, which he had in his truck, and the suspects fled on foot heading east from the residence through an open field.

Deputies from Harrison County, Troopers with Texas DPS, Hallsville PD K-9 unit, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden, and Texas DPS Helicopter Unit began a systematic search of the surrounding areas for the suspects. Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Darren Peeples observed a suspect wearing clothing matching the description of one of the suspects attempting to cross a fence line near the location of FM 3251 and FM 968. This location is approximately 1 mile west from the residence of the complainant.

Mychel Worth, B/M/12-31-1991, was arrested by Game Warden Peeples and transported to the Harrison County Jail. The second suspect, Kevin DeWayne Whaley, B/M/ 03-03-1980, was located in Longview, Texas and was taken into custody by Longview PD. The vehicle that the suspects were using was reported stolen to the Marshall Police Department approximately 30 minutes after the offense occurred.

Charges of Burglary and Aggravated Assault will be filed against both suspects.
