Saturday mail to continue

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) -  A plan by the Postal Service to stop Saturday mail service is being marked "return to sender."

Full Saturday mail delivery will continue- at least for now. That's because Congress isn't allowing a cut in service.

The Postmaster General wanted to stop Saturday mail deliveries beginning in August to save the agency $2 billion per year. A Congressional funding measure is going to block that from happening though.

East Texans say Saturday mail is convenient, but it's not a necessity.

"I mail all my bills. I pay by mail."

72-year-old Nancy Welch uses Saturday mail delivery.

"Weekend, weekday, whatever day i'm out."

But, she wouldn't have a problem switching solely to Monday through Friday delivery if it helped out the agency.

"You just adjust to what's available."

Gene Kirkpatrick wouldn't miss Saturday mail either, but he says there are people who would.

"Businesses need that, I think. And then, a lot of people rely on mail delivery, whether it's for income or what."

The decision to continue Saturday mail service was announced Wednesday after Congress refused to go along with the Postal Service's plan to end it.

"In a statement, the Postal Service Board of Governors said "Although disappointed with this Congressional action, the board will follow the law."

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe says the decision could end up affecting tax payers.

"Failure to act could result in a potential of about $45 billion to $50 billion problem that we do not want the American tax payer to face."

The Postal Service has lost more than $40 billion over the past six years- $16 billion in 2012, alone.

The Postal Service has also had to cut its work force by almost 40%. And, it's slashed hours of service at about half the nation's post offices, including some here in East Texas.

Welch says if the Postal Service problem is that bad, good riddance to Saturday mail.

"You work with what you've got."

The U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors hopes to work with Congress to find a way to overhaul the agency's services.

It still wants to find a way to cut Saturday mail to save money.
