SMITH COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A Smith County jury gave a Gladewater man a life sentence on Wednesday after convicting him of a third-degree felony charge of driving while intoxicated, Smith County Assistant District Attorney Jason Parrish said.

The jury gave the life sentence to Ronald Craig Smith, 55, because he had two prior felony convictions out of California, Parrish said.

Smith was convicted of felony possession of PCP in 1981, and in 1992, he was convicted of possession of cocaine, Parrish said.

The punishment range for Smith was 25 years to life.

The trial took place Wednesday in the Smith County 241st District Court with Judge Jack Skeen Jr. presiding.

"Smith was arrested on March 24 on a driving while intoxicated charge and bonded out and was arrested on April 1 for the same offense in Gregg County," Parrish said.

The defendant's blood alcohol level was .165, more than twice the legal limit, Parrish said.
