ETMC response to West explosion was dispatched from Tyler location

TYLER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - The communications manager for the East Texas Medical Center dispatch in Tyler said the operation in Tyler dispatched the ETMC response to the West explosion.

Chad Richey said that about 7:45 p.m. they received a call from the West EMS to respond.

A total of 15 emergency vehicles were sent from ETMC -- 12 from Waco and three from Ennis were sent to West. The ETMC EMS dispatch covers a 17,000 square-mile area.

"We were primed and ready to go," Richey said, noting they do drills to prepare for this kind of disaster.

They saw lots of burn victims, people with respiratory problems and some people with crush injuries, he said.

They transported to various hospitals 14 critical patients, also known as "red" patients; 30 considered "yellow" who suffered injuries such as broken bones; and 47 "green" level patients, who are considered to be "walking wounded."

Ten of those went by helicopter to hospitals in Dallas, Temple and Waco.

This morning ETMC dispatch had eight personnel on duty, which is normal, and three to four of those were dedicated to coordination for the West event. Now there is one on the West situation, Richey said.

All the ETMC personnel are accounted for. However, Richey said there were four EMS personnel from West who were deceased.
