UPDATE: West mayor says more people allowed to come home

Posted: Updated:

(CBS NEWS) - At a news conference Saturday, officials said the area impacted by the fertilizer plant explosion is safe and some residents will be allowed to return to their homes in West, Texas.

West Mayor Pro-Tem Steve Vanek says the City of West is safe.  He says officials have chosen to allow some residents to return to their homes. However, Vaneks says, residents will be subjected to a strict curfew.

Due to health and safety precautions, Vanek says all residents are encouraged to be out of the impacted area or stay inside their homes by 7 p.m.

The West Mayor Pro-Tem urges residents to be aware of all hazardous debris along the roads and around their residences.

Town officials call this stage one in helping West residents in the recovery process.

The City of West and the West City Counsel request citizens leaving the impacted area go on the City of West's website for continued updates.
