Zumbathon raises money for struggling teens

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - East Texans spent part of their weekend getting fit while raising money for struggling local teens. Saturday dozens of people joined together at a Zumbathon at Colonial Hills Baptist Church.

They each paid a $15 admission fee and all the money goes to a local nonprofit called SKAD, a faith based organization that reaches out to teens struggling with drugs, alcohol, depression, and other issues.

SKAD founder Stella Malone says money raised at the Zumbathon will help with an upcoming event.

"We go out and do outreach. We go to 41 cities in the United States in 50 days and last year there were 500,000 young people alone that came from ages 14-21," Malone said.

She said the organization is about bringing the church to the teens, instead of waiting for them to ask for help. Their goal is to raise $13,000, and they hope to have at least half of that by June.
