Man arrested in Longview on Dallas County murder warrant

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - A former Longview man wanted in a Dallas County murder investigation has turned himself in to local authorities, online records show.

According to the Gregg County Jail and the Dallas Morning News, 52-year-old Kevin Cooks turned himself in to Longview police early Sunday morning just hours after a West Dallas shooting. Cooks and 49-year-old Freddie Samuel were arguing shortly before 10 p.m. in the parking lot of a West Dallas housing community over Samuel living with Cooks' ex-wife, the newspaper quoted Dallas police and arrest warrant information.

A witness told police that Cooks shot Samuel in the chest with a rifle as Samuel was walking to his car, according to the Dallas Morning News. Samuel was pronounced dead at a Dallas hospital.

Gregg County Jail records show Cooks was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday. He is being held on $150,000 bond for the murder charge, plus nearly $1,000 in fines for driving with a suspended license or vehicle liability insurance, no driver's license and possession of a dangerous drug.

Records show that Cooks now lives in Arlington, but records of his 15 arrests in the jail between 1989 and 2000 show that he lived in Longview's Pine Tree area. At least three of Cooks' prior arrests were for assault/family violence, records show.
