Residents find many homes in West beyond repair

Posted: Updated:

WEST (CBSDFW.COM) – A town hall meeting was held in West over the weekend and another is scheduled for Tuesday evening, at 6 p.m. The meetings are meant to keep residents informed about the ongoing repair and rebuilding process.

In the last 24 hours, some residents were allowed back into their homes for the first time since the explosion. Many people who ran from streets in West neighborhoods last week, came back to find their homes are beyond repair.

Resident Rae Turner said she just had to see it for herself. At morning light, she received clearance to return to her home and view what was left. While the residents on her street made it out alive, every home they left behind sustained severe damage. Residents returned to find everything from smashed windows, to collapsed walls.

As families trickled back to their homes questions about the severity of the damage were answered, but what they saw didn't provide comfort.

"It's shocking," Turner said. "You had your house fixed up, now its just destroyed, and we don't know if we [will ever] get to come back here."

Two doors down from the Turner home, Susan Matus surveyed damage to her property. She called herself lucky. "The whole town is suffering. The school, the nursing home, that's who I really feel for."

Turner knows the same can't be said for those living closest to the explosion site.
