L.I.SD announces new safety approach

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - The time has come and now Cheria Roach is finally enrolling her 4 year-old daughter into public pre-school. And with all of the chaos going on around our nation, Cheria says her baby's safety is top priority.

"It's important that I know she's safe when I drop her off."
Representatives from more than 20 public school districts in Texas including Tyler I.S.D. were meeting to discuss a new approach to security and school safety.
"One thing we don't always know is what's going on in the community, what's going on with the police, what's going on at church or what's going on Facebook."
Assistant Superintendent Jody Clements with L.I.SD says a company called Pave Systems is giving them the software for the program called Campus Counts.
It's a database program that stores information on potential security threats -- from sex offenders in the area, to people who have been arrested for gang violence or drug or weapons possession.
That's just the beginning. L.I.SD is asking people in the community to report anything suspicious so they can add that to the database too.
"We're going to be able to work together to first of all identify those instances that are occurring throughout our community and secondly, addressing those with the students and those that are involved to stop things from happening in the future."
While only key L.I.SD personnel can see what's in the database, anyone can post a potential threat.
So they're asking people to be honest, take it seriously, and not make any false reports.
"When I drop my kid off at school I pray everyday 'lord please let her be fine and in the same condition I picked her up in.'"
And cheria says it's a relief knowing the school district is doing something pro-active.
L.I.S.D. says since it's the first school district to implement Campus Count, the new program will come at no cost to the district.
