Texas Cattle Numbers Dwindle

Ken Ambrose owns and operates Sand Spring Ranch in Gilmer.
His beef cattle herd has dwindled from 90 to 24 in just one year.
"The drought has been persistent and nagging, and it had gotten worse and we got heat stressed and didn't get the water that we needed." - Ken Ambrose, Rancher
The US Department of Agriculture says there are only about  3.5 million head of beef cattle in Texas --  the lowest number since 1967.
it's all because of 2 years of drought, killing grass supplies and driving up prices.
That forces ranchers to get rid of their cattle.
"What we have done is we have reduced our stocking rate to match the resources that we have" - Ambrose
"With the recent rainfall, the grass right now is green... but you can still see patches of brown dead grass like this... which has been persistent for 2 years" - Kevin Boyce
It's a bad situation for all livestock.
Julie Chandler once had 37 horses.
   Now she's down to 7.
She had to go outside Texas to sell them.
"The buyers are not here, because they don't have the grass and the feed to afford it" - Chandler
Ken Ambrose says he is hoping for a rainy summer -- to continue doing what he loves.
"I am not here to get rich, I just love it. And as you can see I have a great office." - Ambrose
