Tyler drivers want traffic congestion addressed, committee looks at solutions

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- Some drivers want a solution to their headache.

"I don't come this way on Broadway very often. If I can take the back roads, I do, because it's start and stop the whole time," Linda Nichols, who has lived around Tyler 30 years, said.

Nichols purposefully avoids South Broadway. "I think it's busy every minute of the day. I've never been out to the Broadway area when it's not packed," Nichols said.

To tackle this very issue, a Tyler 1st Steering Committee met and discussed traffic woes.

"One of the suggestions from the committee, is looking at South Broadway for example, and looking at more frontage roads," Heather Nick, Tyler City Planner, said.

She says some people are also in favor of fewer driveways into shopping areas.

"If you have a driveway that is utilized by multiple businesses, that reduces the amount of stopping and starting you have," Nick said.

Traffic engineers say flashing yellow lights installed 4 years ago, have made a difference in helping people get around faster. They also credit adaptive-use traffic lights.
