Web Exclusive: Turning french fries into fuel for cabs

Posted: Updated:

(CNN/KBOI) - A taxi cab company in Boise, Idaho is getting creative to save money on gas.  They're now turning to french fries for fuel.

The next time you're munching on some fries, think about this-- you may also be helping power a new line of cabs. That's what's happening at The Boise Fry company.

Re-cab is using older Mercedes Benz models and converting them to run on bio diesel.  One of the owners came up with the concept from his love of older cars and the environment.

"Whenever I realize these cars are as reliable as they are and they could be used in such an eco friendly way-- that's what spawned the whole concept," says James Orr.

Orr has an engineering degree from BSU and says he was able to convert the first car in the fleet for about eight hundred dollars. The Boise Fry Company uses about 300 gallons of oil a month and donates it to Recab in exchange for advertising on the car.

For some companies used oil can be a hassle that can cost money to dispose of.  Even though the first cab hasn't hit the road it's already getting interest from other cities.

"Not only just to have our cabs in other cities, but because of the eco system we are trying to help sustain," says Jennifer Orr.

Jennifer and James say in just one year their cab can put out 30,000 less tons of CO-2 than a normal cab running the same amount of time.  The french-fry fueled cars are expected to hit the streets next month.
