Trevino coming to UT Tyler Patriot Golf Classic generating buzz

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX)-- An icon in the golf world, professional golfer Lee Trevino will be the special guest at this year's UT Tyler Patriot Golf Classic.

Organizers credit the high-profile name for teams filling up quickly.

"He's probably regarded as one of the best ball strikers the PGA tour has ever had," King Campbell, Head Men and Women's Golf Coach at UT Tyler, said.

Trevino was the first player to win the U.S., British, and Canadian Open Championships in a single year in 1971. Campbell is looking forward to hearing him speak.

"He came from a poor background and made it big, but always kept a sense of humor," Campbell said.

Trevino will be out on the course in the afternoon with UT Tyler President Dr. Rodney Mabry.

"This is one time I'm going to take advantage of my special privilege, and play with him. I'll be the worst golfer in the bunch," Dr. Mabry joked.

The 25 morning and 25 afternoon teams, already filled up after the Trevino announcement.

"He's one of a kind, and I think this may be the best tournament ever," Campbell said.

That tournament is Monday, May 20th. It's in its 27th year and raises more than $150,000 in scholarship money to students every year.
