Plan B decision raises questions about long-term impact

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX) - The FDA ruling that Plan-B One Step emergency contraceptive should be available to teens 15 and older without a prescription or parent, is raising concerns.

Pregnancy Resource Center counselors see a number of women who have taken the pill that can prevent pregnancy.

"Just this week we had a girl that had taken Plan B, and she had no idea what she was taking. She just heard that Plan B would help you not be pregnant so she had unprotected sex," Doreen Hague, Director of the Pregnancy Resource Center, said.

Hague worries that's one consequence of making it easier to get, among others.

"Obviously it's going to promote more promiscuity," Hague said.

Under the new rules, which apply specifically to Plan B, women must show I.D. to prove they're at least 15 years old before buying it over the counter. But Planned Parenthood wants it available to as many people as possible.

Some people we spoke with say it should only be available in certain circumstances. "Teen pregnancies and maybe rape, then Plan B is a good option," Kayla Fonville said.

Before, the drug was only available to those under 17 by prescription.
