Kilgore firefighter's wife loses cancer battle

Posted: Updated:

KILGORE (KYTX) - Some people say Jason and Kim Baxter were meant for each other.

A young couple, Kim only 34-years-old, with a young daughter they had welcomed into this world about three years ago.

"She had put up one heck of a fight," said Cpt. Kyle Huckabee, Kilgore Fire Dept.

A fight, Kilgore Fire Captain Kyle Huckabee said, Jason battled with her.  Kim died Tuesday night from brain cancer at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler.

"I really can't imagine what he's going through. It's got to be the hardest thing he's had to deal with," said Huckabee.

Firefighters worked around the clock, covering his shifts for about a month, just so Jason could be by Kim's side and still bring a paycheck home.

"We've had firefighters covering his shifts 24 hours, they don't expect anything in return. We're just trying to take care of our brother," said Josh McDowell, President of the Kilgore Professional Firefighters Association.

A brother, who is now a single father, left to raise a young daughter by himself.

"I have a three-year-old little girl and a one-year-old son and I can't imagine the pain of losing my wife," said McDowell.

A pain all these firefighters feel as they prepare to say goodbye to a sister and stand together in support for their brother.

"It's a brotherhood, that's what we're doing, we're trying to help our brother out now," said McDowell.

The Kilgore Professional Firefighter's Association is in charge of the donations.
