TJC students solve mock crime

Posted: Updated:
TYLER (KYTX) -

Investigators wrapped up their look at two Tyler crime scenes Wednesday afternoon, but you might be surprised to learn the investigators were students at Tyler Junior College and the crime scenes were fake.

"The woman was home this morning, heard a knock on the door, she opens the door and she's attacked," TJC Criminal Justice Department Chair Jason Waller said as he described the scene that had been set up.

Students were confronted with a crime scene filled with carefully made evidence of a struggle, and even blood on the floor leading to where a man had committed suicide--possibly after committing a sexual assault.

"There's the story that they've been given in our briefing and there's the story the evidence will hopefully tell them and they'll try to figure out which one's correct or if they're both correct," Waller said. "They'll utilize all the skills that they have developed and learned in the last year for this investigation."

Wednesday's exercise was the capstone of a course designed to test all the skills taught in TJC's criminal justice major.

Most of the students will go directly to law enforcement or to get a bachelor's degree.
