Lindale man gets 15-year sentence for shooting at kids after his home was toilet-papered

LINDALE (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A Lindale man who fired multiple shots at four teenagers after his home had been toilet-papered in 2011 has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Smith County Assistant District Attorney Jason Parrish said 31-year-old Jeremy Wayne Hunley was found guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for the Aug. 6, 2011 incident at his home on Angelcourt Circle.

Parrish said three of the boys, all Lindale High School students, had wrapped the house earlier in the night as retaliation for one of the boy's homes being wrapped earlier.

Parrish said the teens had left the area, but took a fourth boy back to the home to see their handiwork.

"They were being kids and getting a giggle over it," he said.

Parrish said Hunley came out of the home and fired five shots at the vehicle that was in the street with all four teens inside. The teens fled the area and told their parents about the incident.

Hunley was arrested several days later by former Smith County Constable Dennis Taylor, who said at the time Hunley had punched holes in walls throughout the house and was seen in a local emergency room the night before the shooting for breaking his hand after hitting a table in anger.

Parrish said during testimony, Hunley's wife testified she knew the boys had wrapped the home and that she had taken her daughter out to wrap other homes.

"This was kids being kids and having fun, and could have ended a lot differently," he said.

Parrish said Hunley will be eligible for parole in seven years.

"It's a very aggravating offense because in the blink of an eye, we could've had four dead kids and I think that is what resonated with the jury. Kids toilet paper houses every weekend. It's just part of high school," he said.
