Taste of Texas draws big crowd to help food bank

TYLER (KYTX) - Perfect weather sure brought out the crowds to FRESH Saturday for the Taste of Texas.

And it didn't sell you short on all things Texas, including Big Tex, horses and steak.

The third annual event was held to help raise money for the East Texas Food Bank.

From the music, to the pets, classic cars, and definitely the food, the crowd surrounded FRESH to get a Taste of Texas.

"Even though I've been grilling for 30 years, I'm no expert and to see all these people come out here with all different ways of cooking, pretty intimidating," says Tom Heermans.

Heermans was part of the East Texas brick cook off team.

He works with Webber grills, and says they have a winning recipe, that's not top secret.

"If people want to go and drill on the internet, can come up with our secret recipe. It won the Chicago State Cookoff in 2005," says Heermans.

He was hoping to take a bite out of the competition.

But winning aside...

"It benefits the East Texas Food Bank so were really feeing our friends and neighbors. So that's really what we're all here for today," says Ashleigh Endicott.

Endicott with FRESH by Brookshire's says the event was held to raise money, and help those in need in East Texas.

"The East Texas Food Bank serves 26 counties, so it really is maybe your neighbor, maybe someone driving next to you right now. Anyone," says Endicott.

An event the size of Texas, giving back to those who can't feed their families.

"I do a lot of cooking for dealers and stores, but to come out and do it for a really good cause, is a lot of fun," says Heermans.

The ladies of Delta Sigma Theta won the cook off.

Last year, the Taste of Texas sent $3,000 to the East Texas Food Bank.
