WYLIE (CNN/WFAA) - Texas lawmakers have passed several bills involving concealed handgun licenses, including one that reduce the number of hours required to get one. People in one North Texas town are packing handgun license classes to learn how to use their handguns, including an unexpected place, a church.

At First Baptist Wylie, a different kind of congregation. Saturday service, led not by a preacher, but a teacher giving a free concealed handgun class.  "I've been thinking about doing it for a long time, but because it was free, there was no reason not to do it," says Andrew Penrose, attended class.

The sanctuary offered this no charge CHL course to anyone meeting state eligibility requirements.  A church leader says this was really just another way to serve.  "We're doing it to bless the community," says Scott Phillips, Pastor of First Baptist Wylie.

There was no shortage of takers. "There's a lot of crazy stuff going on in the world," says Andrew Penrose.  "School shootings and movie theater shootings. You just never know what is going to happen," says Beth Owen, class attendee.

"I want to be able to protect myself and protect my friends and family," says Richard Davis, class attendee.

Those who came to the church for this special teaching did so for different reasons.  "I am taking this class because I believe in my Second Amendment rights," says Chris Alosi, Class Attendee. But they share a common belief that they are better off with a handgun and the knowledge of how to use it.
