5 killed in limo fire, including bride-to-be

Posted: Updated:

(CNN/CBS) - What was supposed to be a fun weekend celebrating a California woman's upcoming wedding comes to a tragic end after five people, including the bride-to-be, are killed after their limousine caught fire.

Authorities say the limo was traveling over the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge when smoke started coming from it. Witnesses say the flames were so huge they could feel the heat as they passed by. The driver and four members of the bachelorette party were able to make it out of the vehicle. The limo driver was not hurt, but authorities say the four surviving passengers were treated for smoke inhalation.

"We don't know how it caught fire, or where it caught fire, so that's going to be part of the investigation, to see what actually happened.N [So,was there an accident on the bridge?] "There was no accident, there was no collision, at this point it was just a one vehicle fire," says Art Montiel of the California Highway Patrol.

Limo-Stop, the company that owns the limo, released a statement saying they were deeply saddened by the deaths and promised to help with the investigation. The San Mateo coroner says it may take up to two days to identify the bodies of the women who died. A relative of the bride-to-be says she was set to get married next month in the Philippines.
