UPDATE: HENDERSON COUNTY (KYTX) - The 4-year-old who was bitten by a pit bull Monday afternoon has been identified by family members as Madi Ponce.

The dog bite happened at her cousin's house off of Richardson Road in Athens.

The dog's owner is Ponce's cousin and she tells CBS 19 that the little girl and her granddaughter were each holding smaller dogs and teasing the 2-year-old pit bull with them. The smaller dogs were snapping at each other when the pit bull snapped at the small dog Ponce was holding and accidentally bit her in the face.

The dog's owner sent the pit bull outside and her brother had a friend shoot the pit bull and another dog on the property.

The home owner said the pit bull had all of its shots.

Ponce and her family were flown to Dallas where she is listed in critical condition at Children's Medical Center.

HENDERSON COUNTY (KYTX) - Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt confirms that a child was attacked by what is believed to be a pit bull.

The attack reportedly happened off of Highway 175.

The 4-year-old girl was flown to Children's Medical Center of Dallas with reports of wounds to the face. She is reportedly in critical condition.

According to police scanner traffic there was also gun fire exchange near the location but was unrelated to the dog attack.

KYTX CBS 19 has a crew en route and will bring more updates as they become available.
