Inside St. Paul Children's Foundation

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- More than 20,000 children in Smith County struggle to get enough food, clothes, and health care every year.

St. Paul Children's Foundation exists to meet that need. Lisa Morgan is one that uses St. Paul's food pantry every couple of months.

"Without the assistance of food stamps and this place, we wouldn't be able to make it," Morgan said.

With a husband and 3 kids at home, she's even shopping for clothes. "Anything that we need, they have always been here for us," Morgan said.

She explains the hardship she's endured to end up at St. Paul's door. "I've applied for disability. I'm no longer able to work, so at 47, my earning ability has ended. My husband is retired, we live on $1258 a month, which doesn't go very far," Morgan said.

The St. Paul Food Pantry served 12,000 Smith County families like hers last year. And the need is only growing.

"We see a lot of people who were recently employed who have lost their jobs. We're seeing people who are employed and just the money they make is just not enough to cover their bills," Sharlyn Cannady, Executive Director of St. Paul Children's Foundation, said.

Cannady says now with a pediatric medical and dental clinic, the foundation is far from where it started in the early 1990's. Volunteers have helped make it what it is today.

"I wanted to follow what it says in the Bible, love God and love others. That's what's happening here," Patricia Owen, one volunteer, said.

Owen adds she'll be volunteering until she can't walk anymore.
