Glocal Giving Day Success

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Thank everyone for participating in our first Glocal Giving Day. We collected more than 2,500 pounds of nonperishable food and nearly $1,600 to help fund feeding programs in Africa.

Because of the generosity from our community, East Texas families in need will be able to put food on the table, and children in  Nairobi Kenya will be able to eat two meals every day at school.

Those with St. Paul Children's Foundation and No Hungry Children say the day was a huge success.

As the food kept piling higher in this 18-wheeler-

"Nine pounds!"

- and the donations kept growing, there became proof of a giving community here in East Texas.

"It's just amazing. I mean, people in East Texas are amazing to me. Their hearts are just so huge and so generous. And, we couldn't do this without their help."

Wendi Rees co-founded No Hungry Children with her brother three years ago. The ministry funds feeding programs for schools in Nairobi Kenya.

"This is so meaningful for those children. I mean, that is a child who will eat for two months because this lady decided to skip one meal."

East Texans not only emptied their wallets, they cleaned out their pantries to help feed local families in need.

Some of CBS19's finest helped show them the way.

"Hi, how are you?"

"We know that it's important to feed the children in our community as well as global."

Dean DeChiro dropped off 154 pounds of food from First Baptist Church of Whitehouse.

He says it feels good to give back.

"Oh my gosh, it swells my heart. We know that we're helping in our community."

Mitzie Avera with St. Paul Children's Foundation says they need all the help they can get to support local struggling families.

"We're just ecstatic about the turnout and the generosity of the community."

A community that understands poverty comes in many faces.
