Stamp Out Hunger happening Saturday

Posted: Updated:
TYLER (KYTX) -

This Saturday, May 11, the United States Postal Service will be holding its 21st annual Stamp Out Hunger Drive. Local donations of non-perishable food should be bagged and set by your mailbox that day. The food will go to the East Texas Food Bank to benefit its full 26-county service area.

On Thursday Tyler mail carrier Gale Suggs walked her regular route--starting on North Grand in Tyler. Box by box and house by house she was dropping off post cards asking for food and reminding people that Saturday is the day to donate.

"I have people before the month of May asking 'Well when is that food drive?' So there are some people who remember it," Suggs said. "Some remember it year after year."

And some people just can't wait to give. Diane Jackson already had her donation ready to go.

"We know where we've been, but we don't know where we're going," Jackson said. "So I just think it's the Christian way to help. When you see someone who's hungry, feed them."

It's people like Jackson who helped the East Texas Food Bank reach a record donation of 78,000 pounds last year.

"The letter carriers are doing the heavy work," East Texas Food Bank Executive Director Dennis Cullinane said. "They're going to be doing the heavy lifting and filling up their trucks so we want to thank them for this weekend of extra duty."

"If I've got it, they've got it," Jackson said.

Suggs is getting ready for her 21st year of making these special deliveries. She said it's still worth it.

"It's just the satisfaction of being able to help someone, you know? There are so many hungry people in the world," Suggs said.
