'Active shooter' prompts brief lockdown on SMU Campus

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) Southern Methodist University and neighboring Stonewall Jackson Elementary were briefly placed on lockdown Friday morning after SMU authorities reported an active shooter on campus.

The university's website reported just after 9:15 a.m. that the suspected had been detained and the lockdown lifted. It is unclear if the suspect had a weapon in his possession when arrested.

A witness reports seeing a man believed to be the suspect tased and arrested on Mockingbird Lane just east of North Central Expressway (75) in the Jason's Deli parking lot.

The school reports that there were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.

The university says that final exams scheduled for 11:00 a.m. today will begin at 11:30 a.m. Students who missed exams scheduled prior to 11:00 a.m. will need to work with their professors.

An SMU alert text message was initially sent by the school to all staff and students at 9:06 a.m. alerting of the situation.
