American Heart Association: Pets could reduce chances of heart disease

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - A report released by the American Heart Association Thursday says having a pet could decrease your chances for heart disease.

The report said dogs were the best pets to have to aid in better heart health. According to the study of over 5,200 adults they found that over 50 percent of adults with dogs got the recommended amount of daily activity than a non-dog owner.

Tyler resident Nona Cranshaw walks her dog every day at the Rose Rudman trails. She said, "Exercise for him and quite frankly he knows when it's time for his walk, exercise for him and exercise for me too. So it's just a good way for us to bond."

The study shows owning a pet could lower blood pressure, cholesterol, minimize obesity and have a positive effect on the body's reaction to stress.
