Jacksonville mayoral race headed for runoff

JACKSONVILLE (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - The three-way race for Jacksonville mayor will head for a runoff, with Saturday's election results fully counted.

Incumbent Kenneth Melvin, 72, who is retired, will face Rob Gowin, 44, Sadler's Restaurant owner.

The race is headed to a runoff June 11 because no candidate garnered at least 50 percent of the vote.

Gowin received 44.7 percent, or 426 of the ballots cast. Melvin won 40.4 percent, or 389 votes.

William Igbokwe, 23, a political science graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, was third with 147 votes, or 15.3 percent.
