Whitehouse voters pass alcohol proposition

WHITEHOUSE (KYTX) - CBS 19's Jennifer Heathcock has been watching the alcohol election in Whitehouse.

People will be able to purchase beer and wine at this gas stations since that final vote did swing in favor of the proposition.

We've actually had a lot of people tell us, they don't want to see any shelves cleared for alcohol.

Last minute voters rush to cast their ballot in Whitehouse.

"We voted for, keep the taxes here in Whitehouse," says Tony and Glenda Brazil.

The decision divided voters before it was final.

"I know a lot of people around here and they don't want it," says Joe Day.

"Have to think about the future of our children and the image that it portrays and examples we set for our young people," says Reginald Long.

Long says he wanted the city to remain dry, that's why he moved here.

The measure calls for sale of beer and wine in stores like Brookshire's and convenient stores.

Votes were close all night, but ended favoring the proposition.

"It should give Whitehouse more money to help take care of buildings and things around here," says Glenda Brazil.

Brazil says the sale of alcohol hasn't caused problems in other communities.

"At one time they didn't have it in their community and as far as I've observed, there hasn't been anymore crime," says Glenda Brazil.

"It's a democracy," says Long.

The city says alcohol sales would help sales tax revenues increase, which could help fund things like the new municipal fire department and renovations for the baseball complex.
