Voters: $160.5 million TISD bond is worth it

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Tyler residents voted yes to a $160 million bond. It passed in yesterday's election with more than 60 percent of the vote. Parents and students say it worth it.

For children, few things matter more than having fun. That isn't true for one 13-year-old Hubbard Middle school student.

"We were really excited about it being passed," said Luke.

Luke and his father Casey asked that their last name not be used. They say they are behind the bond since it will directly improve middle and high schools.

"We certainly voted in favor of the bond," said Casey.

He said the current schools are just too outdated.

"Hubbard and Moore built in the 50's and 60's and they look about like they did when they were built back then."

Overcrowding is another concern, he said it's the reason so many students have to have class in portables rooms.

Luke said it's somewhat of a distraction, "it's outside so you hear all the noises outside."

Now that the bond has been approved, students in the next couple of years will be able to step out of the portable classrooms and into what the district is calling 21st century learning.

Tyler ISD superintendent Gary Mooring released a statement thanking the community for supporting the bond. He said, money from the bond will build a state of the art Career and Technical Education Center and three more middle schools.

Casey said, "I think its definitely worth...I believe the motto slogan is better schools make better communities."

His son Luke agrees, "It'll be better for your education so you can go on through life with a better education and get a better job and everything."

The district said they hope to have all the projects complete by August 2015. Mooring said the district expects to just keep growing estimating the school population will have 2,500 more students by 2020.
