Times Square Shopping Center renovations

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - You may have noticed some construction as you drive by the Times Square shopping center off Broadway in Tyler. It's getting a facelift for the first time since 1985!

The owner says it's been due for an upgrade for quite some time. She hopes a more 21st century look will attract more people and encourage more businesses to open up in the vacant spots.

67-year-old Nancy Williams says it's about time.

"It just looks the same as it's always been. It doesn't attract you, you know. It just looks kinda dull."

But, all that is about to change soon.

"Very modern, so we're excited about that."

Ryan Hall is manager of C.R. Scrubs.

He says workers at the shopping center can't wait to see the finished product.

"I definitely think once the renovation is done, it's going to help out with traffic- more customers, bringing them into the store. So, it's definitely a good thing."

"We thought we would just go all in and make it really nice." says shopping center owner Shirley Pyle.

She agrees this upgrade is long overdue.

"I think it will really help." she says. "I mean, I think people will enjoy coming."

She hired architect Steve Fitzpatrick to do the job.

"We've done a few things I think will help business."

Another thing that's outdated about the shopping center- no elevators. Fitzpatrick says he hopes by adding those in, it'll allow more people to get up to the second floor.

He says the new cable railings and glass will also give the shopping center a more open feel. For business and retail, he says the more you can see in, the better.

"We think this will really enhance some of the businesses that are here and some of the new businesses as well."

Renovations for the first half of the project are expected to be complete by this summer. The next half of the shopping center will be finished in the fall. Pyle says the summer is a busy time of year at the shopping center. That's why she wanted to wait to complete the next section in the fall.

All of these businesses are still open though in the midst of this construction, except the Mexican restaurant, Casa Ole. That's going to reopen as a new chain restaurant. Shopping center owner Shirley Pyle says she's waiting to announce what it will be after the lease is signed.
