Health Alert: High levels of sodium found in fast food

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Despite calls for the food industry to voluntarily reduce sodium levels, a new study finds the salt in processed and fast food remains as high as ever.

Researchers from Northwestern found that between 2005 and 2011, the sodium content in processed food decreased slightly while the sodium in fast food products actually went up a little.

Most Americans eat way more than the daily recommended amount of salt, most of it comes from processed or restaurant foods.

Health experts say it's time for the government to step in and regulate the food industry.

(CBS) - Just days ahead of new laws requiring large restaurant chains to post calorie content, a new study suggests all restaurants should list nutritional content.

Researchers at Tuft University found the average meal at individual and small chain restaurants contains two to three times the number of calories an adult should eat at a single sitting.

In fact, the average meal packs two-thirds of the calories a person should be eating for the whole day.

(CBS) - If you want to avoid exposure to tobacco smoke, new research suggests you choose hotels that ban smoking altogether rather than go to ones which have designated non-smoking rooms.

Researchers in California found air levels of tobacco smoke pollution were seven times higher in non-smoking rooms of hotels that had partial smoking bans than in hotels that banned smoking completely.
