Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) - The Charles Wilson Outpatient Clinic is again "joining forces" with Veterans, families, East Texas Veteran Service Organizations, auxiliaries and many others for the Second Annual Veteran's Family Day on Armed Forces Day.

It will be a free, fun filled and informative event for all Veterans and their families.  Some of the featured activities are; a patriotic hat contest (the winner will receive a $50 gift card), a Kid's Kazoo band and many other children activities, The Armed Forces Day Car and Bike Show, live music, free hotdogs and refreshments, many demonstrations including Project Healing Waters fly fishing, community agencies and programs from the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center offering Veteran and family education and outreach.

Armed Forces Day, which is always the 3rd Saturday in May, is a day to honor our military.  Veteran's Family Day is a day to honor our Veterans and celebrate families.  According to the United States Department of Defense website;  on August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson, announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Day. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department: The Department of Defense. Robert D. Lovett, former Secretary of Defense said of Armed Forces Day, "It is fitting and proper that we devote one day each year to paying special tribute to those whose constancy and courage constitute one of the bulwarks guarding the freedom of this nation and the peace of the free world."

WHO:              Open to all community members.

WHEN:           Saturday, May 18, 2013, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
