Noncustodial parent program could extend to Smith, other ET counties

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Some East Texas parents are learning job skills in manufacturing to better provide for their children.

The Noncustodial Parent Program from the Texas Workforce Commission and the Attorney General's Office teaches skills to texans whose kids are not in their custody but have received public assistance.

There are 48 participants in Gregg County, and eight in Van Zandt County.
"Learning is important, and you never stop," participant Michelle Niccum of Longview said. "You never stop learning."

The program is only in a few Texas counties now. Project Director Harold Womble says there is a bill in the Texas Legislature -- House Bill 1 -- that would extend the non-custodial parent program into Smith and other counties.

That bill awaits approval from the full legislature before the governor can sign it into law.
